CPAM Leadership Seminar

Practical Strategies for Providing School-based Leadership for More Powerful Teaching
of K-12 Mathematics
Wednesday, April 21, 2010 / 1:30 PM - 4:45 PM
Manchester 1 and 2,
San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina 333 West Harbor Drive
Spend the afternoon prior to the NCTM Annual Meeting in San Diego with your CPAM colleagues and Steve Leinwand, a nationally recognized leader and activist in the mathematics community. The afternoon’s agenda is a thought-provoking presentation involving participant discussion and reflection on Practical Strategies for Providing School-based Leadership for More Powerful Teaching of K-12 Mathematics. This is the sixth in the series of CPAM Leadership Seminars. Each year participants are challenged to make a more effective impact in mathematics education. The focus of this year’s seminar is providing practical strategies to improve the quality of instruction and the degree of professional collaboration that result in higher levels of student performance.

Steve Leinwand facilitated the 2006 CPAM Leadership Seminar with great success. Participants left that session rejuvenated and energized. Steve is a dynamic presenter ready to engage and confront seminar participants in serious discussion about their potential impact on mathematics education.

The fast-paced, example-laden presentation will examine the critical need for our individual and collective leadership within each of our schools to reduce the professional isolation that impedes broad improvement of practice. We’ll talk about, and challenge ourselves to implement a set of practical, easy-to-adapt strategies in the domains of curriculum, teaching, learning and equity that help move us toward our vision of much higher levels of student performance.

Steve Leinwand is a Principal Research Analyst at the American Institutes for Research (AIR) in Washington, D.C., and has over 30 years experience in leadership positions in mathematics education. He currently serves as mathematics expert on a wide range of AIR projects that evaluate programs, develop assessments and provide technical assistance. Steve’s most recent work has included the development of test and item specifications and an Algebraic Reasoning item pool for the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) High School Longitudinal Study and serving as Implementation Task Leader for the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) Mathematics

Check-in begins at 1:00 PM with the program starting promptly at 1:30 PM. Refreshments will be provided.
